Frustum basin design: Camelia_oak leaves pattern

Toni Warburton, Artist. Blog

Basin design “camelia_oak leaves pattern” watercolour on fast paper, thinking about the Ko-Kutani glaze palette. A recent post for ‘sonic sketchbooks 35‘ by Gary Warner with his reminiscence about his visit to Kanazawa in 2017 took me back to Winter 1996 when I was on a cultural research residency in Japan at the Australia Council studio in Tokyo to experience the aesthetics of ceramics, tea ceremony and gardens. Entranced by the deep green, yellow, dark blue, purple (Aote) and red, green, purple, dark blue, yellow (Iroe) colour palettes of Ko- Kutani pottery, I made a field trip with @chris._ward to visit the Kutani Museum, wander around the Kenroku-en stroll garden and visit Kohei Nakamura to see .his take on ‘utsushi’ (reproduction) of traditional tea ceremony ware. (See fascinating discussion on Nakamura’s ‘making’ of such “tea bowls that are not made” in Critical Fieldwork by Minoru Shimiza, ART iT)
