Surface Tension
a material performance by Toni Warburton in the context of PLATFORM 2019
artist notes
a small trolley with a translucent screen traverses the foreground of the audience……. a light beams onto the surface of water in a container on the trolley……. Patterns of reflected light (Caustics) are captured by the artist on an oval hand held screen……. the trolley is darkened and a small backlit screen unfolds……. activated shadows are performed by the artist with hand held abstracted shapes and flicker actions , informed by the structure and movements of aquatic insects: water boatman, water strider, water spider.
Toni Warburton, Surface Tension, material performance 30th June 2019
echoes of shadows (sound brief for Marcus Whale )
The notion of a pond at night ….. a soundscape that echoes the performed shadows ….. small shadows are played to gliding harmonica and slightly percussive slide sounds….. intermittent water drop sounds: 6 beats ( 6 insect legs) and 8 beats ( 8 spider legs)….. Different single string notes layer the soundscape to suggest crickets, frogs , insects.
