‘Containers for borrowed views’
Japanese walled gardens often incorporate a distant vista, a ‘borrowed’ view to complete their composition. Such gardens are apprehended through the immersion and movement of the perceiver. This embodied perception is very much akin to what a pottery form invites, particularly open container forms like dishes, bowls and basins.
