A Mutable Medium, Ceramics at Sydney Contemporary

Toni Warburton, Artist. Blog

To experience the range and scope of art media and practices at Sydney Contemporary is salutary.

A subset of that is the panopoly of ceramic genres and modalities on show.
This mutable medium encompasses the abstract form and surface language and decorative virtuosity of the potter’s art, the mimetic and gestural powers of expression, colour and formal patterning of the painter’s domain, sculptural plasticity, textures and the mediation of casting, the enigma of the conceptual object and the dramatic melt and fracture of firing and cooling processes.

Some ceramics that caught my eye between chats on an afternoon spin around the booths at Carriageworks: 1.Lynda Draper, 2.Alan Constable, 3.Glenn Barkley, 4.Neville French/ Belinda Fox collaboration, 5.Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran, 6.John Olsen/ la Paloma collaboration.
