Cressida Campbell
Cressida Campbell’s vast ANG show reveals the unique process that embodies her vision and her absorption in the time spent to compose each elegant, book -ended pair of images: the engraved, fresco like painted plywood block and its printed, paper mirror image. I wish there was a word to describe the particular mottled texture and pulled tension that is imparted to the watercolour surfaces on wood and on paper, when these prints are peeled from their painted blocks.
Campbell’s wit, eloquent draftsmanship, exquisite colour sense and scrutinising gaze mediate subjects from her own everday and from artists she admires in a pop art sort of way.
